Chirundu Businessman Critically Injured in Aggravated Robbery

Biness Mungundu, a businessman from Chirundu, is fighting for his life at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after being attacked by armed robbers in an aggravated robbery that occurred yesterday.

Mungundu and his colleague, Aubrey Siazambo, were ambushed and shot at close range by four armed criminals at the Lilayi turn-off around 16:20hrs. The victims were traveling from Lusaka towards Kafue when the assailants, who were trailing them in a grey Mark X vehicle with suspected fake registration plates (BBA 7522), carried out the attack.

According to Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the gunmen opened fire on the victims before stealing an undisclosed amount of money and a pistol. The robbers fled the scene using Lilayi Road, leaving the victims with severe injuries. Both men were rushed to UTH for urgent medical attention.

Condemning the incident, Mr. Hamoonga stated that a manhunt for the perpetrators has been launched.

“The Zambia Police Service has since initiated a full-scale investigation into this heinous crime, and all efforts are being directed towards apprehending the culprits. We urge anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to report to the nearest police station without delay,” he said.

Mr. Hamoonga further issued a stern warning to criminals, emphasizing that acts of lawlessness will not be tolerated.

“Those engaging in violent crimes should be reminded that the law will catch up with them, and they will face the full wrath of justice,” he added.

Authorities are appealing for public cooperation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
